Although they do have their time and place, patient transfer lifts that roll along the floor while holding a patient in the air have unavoidable drawbacks that are eliminated altogether by ceiling lifts. Transfer lifts can be difficult to roll through thick carpeting or uneven flooring - especially while holding a patient. In contrast, ceiling lifts can either manually slide along a level track or else move along itself with an integrated lateral-drive motor. Because they require a caregiver to physically push the lift, traditional transfer lifts cannot possibly allow full user-independence. In contrast, when equipped with a Body Support Harness can enable full independence throughout a user's home, eliminating the need for caregiver-assisted transfers altogether.
