At Access Elevator, Inc., we believe accessibility solutions begin with understanding people first. Recently, our Roselle team gathered for an in-depth staff training meeting focused on improving the way we connect with clients, caregivers, and families to provide the best possible mobility and accessibility solutions.
While equipment and technology are important, our training reinforced that every recommendation starts with truly understanding the client’s daily life, physical needs, emotional challenges, and long-term goals.
Understanding the Bigger Picture
One of the major themes discussed during training was learning how to better understand the parameters of each unique situation. In many cases, our team works with several individuals at once throughout the process:
- The end user needing assistance.
- Family members or caregivers.
- Healthcare professionals or agencies involved in care.
Every client situation is different. Some individuals may need a temporary solution after surgery or injury, while others may require progressive accessibility modifications due to long-term mobility changes. Emotions, uncertainty, and safety concerns are often part of the conversation as families navigate these important decisions.
Our team focused on learning how to ask better questions, listen more carefully, and investigate the client’s current living situation to fully understand how Access Elevator can make a meaningful difference.
“Show Me How You Transfer”
One of the most impactful discussions during the training centered around a simple but powerful phrase:
“Show me how you transfer.”
Understanding how a client moves from a bed to a chair, from a wheelchair into a vehicle, or throughout their home provides critical insight into the challenges they face every day.
By observing these movements firsthand, our team can better recommend:
- Stair lifts
- Vertical platform lifts
- Wheelchair ramps
- Home accessibility solutions
- Mobility equipment
This approach helps ensure we are not just selling equipment – we are providing solutions that improve safety, independence, and quality of life.
Hands-On Experience Creates Better Perspective
As part of the training, our staff also spent time in our training center testing mobility aids firsthand, including both manual wheelchairs and power chairs.
Experiencing mobility equipment personally allows our team to better understand:
- Space limitations.
- Maneuverability challenges.
- Physical effort required for daily mobility.
- Accessibility obstacles clients may face inside their homes and communities.
This hands-on experience creates greater empathy and perspective, helping our sales representatives and staff better relate to the people we serve.
